A Book By Its Cover written by Damon Chua and directed by Kevin Cochran is a look at two families, one in China and one in California, that on the surface are stereotypical, but underneath lies the truth of these two families, namely, that they are actually quite similar in their lives, their goals and their relationships. It’s a story of relationships brought to life with the strong performances of the two cousins played by Janet Song (Millie) and Kim Chueh (Pui Mun). The two husbands played by Jesse Sharp (Greg) and Joon Lee (Ah Keung) provide a strong foundation and support for the conflict that develops between Millie and Pui Mun and ultimately they become the antithesis for the Chinese/California stereotypes that surround the two cousins. Tying all this together is the perfect use of moving walls on stage facilitated by the “host” played by David Allen Jones whose role and casting is a giant question mark throughout the performance until the final Ah-HA! moment that ties everything back to the title of the play (no we are not spoiling the secret!). A great cast of performances by obviously seasoned professionals, a great story and a very intimate setting at the Grove Theater Center makes this a production worth seeing.
