aof monthly

I know, I know… May is almost over and we’re just now publishing the April Monthly Re-cap. Sorry for taking so long, but better late than never, right? As a new contributing author for AOF, let me share with you some of the exciting events from this past April!

First of all, we have gladly announced the winners in the short film categories for the Winter quarter of the Asians On Film Festival! Winners of the Winter quarter will automatically compete with other quarterly winners for our year-end “best” award in their respective categories. The quarterly winners will also be considered for screening at our Film Festival in February 2014. [Click HERE for a full list of winners in all short film categories]

The month of April started with the Vietnamese International Film Festival. VIFF is an eight-day event held mainly at the University of California, Irvine showcasing films made by Vietnamese and Vietnamese diasporic filmmakers.  [Click HERE for our coverage of VIFF and interviews with filmmakers whose works were showcased during the festival]

The 14th annual Newport Beach Film Festival took place April 25 to May 2. This festival is special to AsiansOnFilm.com because it is one of the few major film festivals that feature an Asian Showcase event. The Newport Beach Film Festival Asian Showcase featured three film screenings and a fantastic gala celebrating Asian film, food and culture. Follow the links to find out more about this year’s spotlight films: A Werewolf Boy, One Mile Above and Key of Life.

Finally, my personal favorite of the month: the release of the first domestic trailer for Wong Kar-Wai’s latest martial arts epic, The Grandmaster! I saw the premiere of this film in China and absolutely loved the film! I can’t wait to see it for a second time because the scenes of Ip Man fighting in the rain are just spectacular! The Grandmaster is set to release in the U.S. on August 23. I will definitely go and see it again. If you are a native Chinese speaker, you’re in for a treat because the original Chinese dialogue is some of the most beautiful and poetic dialogue to have graced the big screen in recent years! [Go HERE to see the trailer for The Grandmaster.]
