Much like my title for this post, Elizabeth Liang’s one-woman show, Alien Citizen, doesn’t put on the politically correct boxing gloves as she hits you hard with the gritty and emotional telling of her story about growing up as a third culture kid (one who is of mixed ethnicity and living outside of their passport countries).

I have to give Elizabeth Liang a lot of credit and respect for creating an intimate and raw telling of her life story. This show was an ultimate display of negative capability — the willingness to embrace uncertainty, live with mystery, and make peace with ambiguity. Elizabeth puts herself out there, both literally and figuratively, for all to see, judge and criticize, all without so much as batting an eye.

Alien Citizen‘s story shouldn’t be a shocker to most people who embrace more than one culture or have a “-American” after their ethnic claim, but it’s Elizabeth’s performance that really stands out. Her ability to tap into her emotions at a moment’s notice and bring forward a truthful and deep meaning to her words is something to be experienced. You can do nothing but hang on as Elizabeth takes you on an emotional roller coaster through her life around the world.

From the outside looking in, the story of Elizabeth’s life seemed quite exciting and interesting, having lived in places like Guatemala, Morocco and Egypt. She chooses a rather teen angst-y approach to the telling of her story, with seeming complaint after complaint of how her life in an exotic locale pushed her passed her comfort zone with a steep learning curve, but thankfully comes around full circle with an adult revelation: you are the sum of your experiences and that’s what makes you special.

All in all, Alien Citizen is a fantastic professional and personal accomplishment from a talented and passionate performer.

Elizabeth Liang’s Alien Citizen runs Fridays and Saturdays through June 1st, 2013 at the Asylum Lab in Los Angeles. Go HERE for more information and to purchase tickets for Alien Citizen.

Warner Bros. has just released the official main trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim!

Giant Kaiju monsters fighting giant Jaeger robots in Asia? What’s not to like?! The film also features an awesome cast that includes Rinko Kikuchi, Ron Perlman and Idris Elba. I can’t wait for this movie to release on July 12th!

Check out the epic trailer below!

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot and an untested trainee — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

The nation’s premier Asian American theater, East West Players, is celebrating its 47th anniversary season with a production of CHESS, which is a musical based on the book by Richard Nelson with lyrics from Sir Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Aida), and composed by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson (ABBA, Mamma Mia!).

CHESS “involves a romantic triangle between two top chess players – an American and a Russian – and a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other. All of this takes place within the context of the Cold War, as both countries vie for international chess victories for propaganda purposes.”

You may recognize some of the songs from the awesome 1980′s pop-rock soundtrack that Time Magazine called “one of the best rock scores ever produced.” CHESS introduced a few hits, including “I Know Him So Well” and “One Night in Bangkok”, which Mike Tyson sings at the end of The Hangover 2.

Opening night is May 15, 2013 at the David Henry Hwang Theater at the Union Center for the Arts, located in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles.

We sat down with Ryan Potter to talk about the show and perhaps continuing the story of SUPAH NINJAS!

Created by Leo Chu and Eric Garcia the series premiered as a special preview on Nickelodeon on January 17, 2011 and revolves around Mike Fukanaga and his friends, Owen and Amanda. After the death of his grandfather, Mike is given a mysterious letter which leads him to discover that he comes from a long line of vigilante ninjas. With Owen, and later Amanda, they are ushered into the world of crime-fighting, forming the team “Supah Ninjas.” They are trained with a hologram of Mike’s grandfather, whom Owen refers to as “Hologramps” in Empire City.

Growing up in an Asian household, the annual Miss Chinatown Pageant was kind of a big deal. Each year, young Asian-American women competed for the opportunity to represent the Asian-American community on a local and national level.

I remember attending the pageants with my parents as a young boy, and later as a college student I got involved with the pageant as a talent recruiter. Try to picture me approaching shy and reserved Asian girls in my most un-creeper way, and asking them if they wanted to strut their stuff on a stage. The girls would usually shoot me a nasty look and run in the opposite direction, but occasionally I would get lucky and approach someone who had aspirations of being Miss Chinatown.

The journey of a Miss Chinatown Pageant contestant is a complex one; a coming of age for many young Asian-American women. Each contestant’s road to the crown is unique, and writer/director Daisy Lin has captured the trials and tribulations, both on the stage and off the stage, in an award winning documentary called Yours Truly, Miss Chinatown.

The film uncovers the intimate stories of three young women who vie for the Miss Chinatown crown and is just as much a commentary on social and cultural issues as it is a documentary of the pageant itself. Can a Miss Chinatown contestant be successful if she’s of mixed ethnicities? Can a family accept a boyfriend of a different ethnicity? These are only some of the issues that are brought to light in Yours Truly, Miss Chinatown.

There are very few films that explore the struggles of young Asian-American women and Daisy Lin doesn’t pull any punches with her directorial debut. It’s an uncensored look at what it’s like to navigate two cultures with conflicting values.

Expand your cultural horizons by watching Yours Truly, Miss Chinatown in its entirety below, courtesy of SnagFilms.

When you are confronted by a friend who keeps yelling “OMG Spot!” while pointing to their mouth, licking the lips, and unable to calm down long enough to explain themselves, you find yourself in a guessing game. So you hurry to the web to google SPOT. Here is what you get:

1.	A rounded mark or stain.
2.	A small blemish on the skin.
3.	Something that mars one’s character.

You quickly check your friend’s shirt and find no stains. You scan their face and find nothing obvious. Then it hits you, you friend’s reputation just went south. You get a cold chill and then think, “It can’t be true” since your friend is excited, so it must be about their new dog, SPOT! You smile just as your friend blurts out, “No! It’s a new spin on sweet in Manhattan’s East Village and Koreatown.” Hence is born definition #5 (after “the name of a pet”), SPOT DESSERT BAR.

SPOT DESSERT BAR is cozy, friendly, and a great meeting spot and of course it is full of unique Asian influenced desserts (like the amazing Green Tea Lava Cake) that hit the spot. It’s a dessert bar like no other that’s home to a whole new world of taste where traditional confections are re-imagined and spiked with a healthy dose of Asian flare. Thanks to unique ingredients like Green Tea, Kabocha, Yuzu and more, the desserts pack innovative flavors and unexpected benefits in every bite. That’s what Asians On Film found out on a recent trip to NYC, so we begged General Manager Mark Lee to treat all AOF readers as special guests. Thanks to Mark Lee, those in NYC or visiting NYC, who stop into SPOT DESSERT BAR, at 13 St. Marks Place (East Village) or 11 West 32nd Street (Koreatown) and simply ask your server for the AOF discount, will receive 10% off any seasonal dessert tapas now through the end of May!

Yes, we are off topic of the Asian American film industry for this brief moment, but Actors and Directors need to eat so we feel it’s justified!

Variety recently posted a fantastic write-up about Fast & Furious 6 helmer Justin Lin, touching on his early days with the Fast & Furious franchise and exploring his efforts on bridging the gap between Hollywood and the highly sought after China market.

The article, written by Scott Foundas, was insightful and personal. I found it funny that Justin still occasionally has trouble getting past studio security guards because he doesn’t look like a director.

Go HERE for the original article and to learn more about how Justin Lin took a sagging Fast & Furious franchise and turned it around.

The article has also been re-posted below for your convenience:

Imagine that you are 42 years old, your last three films earned over $1.1 billion at the worldwide box office, you have transformed a sagging franchise into a robust film series, and you are a native Mandarin speaker at a time when Hollywood is hungry to plant a flag in the Chinese market.

In short, it’s a great moment to be Justin Lin.

Yet the unassuming man who sits on a sofa in his editing suite on the Universal Studios lot on a recent afternoon might easily be mistaken for the UCLA grad student he once was rather than one of the movie industry’s prime directors. Fresh-faced and attired in a Nike golf shirt, he politely excuses the acrid aroma of fermented soybeans emanating from the take-out container on his lap.

When he first embarked on the “Fast & Furious” franchise, there were days when Lin had trouble getting past the security guards at the studio’s front gates—something, he says only half jokingly, that still happens from time to time.

“I don’t look like a director,” he says, by which he means partly his age but mostly his ethnicity.

It is just over a month before the release of “Fast & Furious 6,” the fourth Lin-directed entry in Universal’s popular street-racing series, and two weeks before Lin must turn over his final cut to the studio. Just two days earlier, he was still on set, shooting a few last-minute inserts with one of his stars, Dwayne Johnson. Now Lin is scrutinizing visual effects shots, some of which fail to meet his standards for realism. “You get to play with physics on these movies,” Lin says, noting that all of the series’ engine-revving action is executed live on the set, by a crack team of second unit directors, picture car coordinators and stuntmen. CGI is used only to enhance what’s already there.

One of the principal audience pleasures of any Fast movie comes from seeing heavy machinery perform gravity-defying feats of the sort usually reserved for Ringling Bros. and the New York City Ballet. In the case of “Fast 6″’s piece de resistance—a complex chase along a winding cliffside highway involving a small fleet of vehicles, a helicopter and a tank—that meant spending one full month of the film’s grueling 150-day schedule shooting in the Canary Islands, fine-tuning every screeching halt, spinning reverse and mid-air jump. On a large monitor, one of Lin’s editors plays the latest version of the sequence, in which bodies hang from and leap between vehicles with astonishing grace, while the tank smashes through full-sized cars as if they were straw.

“We didn’t need a tank sequence,” remarks Lin, “but there were three character moments I had to have at that point, which had to do with the idea of trust, and once I realized what those were I started designing the action to go around that.” Sometimes, Lin says, it’s easier to reveal the true nature of a character through action rather than dialogue.

Indie guru John Pierson, who has had Lin as a guest speaker in his University of Texas film class, says of the director, “I think because he comes from an indie/film-school background, he’s managed to keep these films rooted in the physical world, which makes a big difference. On top of that, he brings a genuine enthusiasm for the material and…for adding to the characters.”

Lin was still enrolled at UCLA when the first “Fast and the Furious,” directed by Rob Cohen, hit theaters in 2001. He remembers excitedly going to see it, having recently learned about the subculture of illegal street racing from a documentary made by some fellow students. He was particularly intrigued by the preponderance of Asian-American drivers, who would race their heavily modified imports against American-made muscle cars in a show of ethnic pride. But he was disappointed that in the debut picture “the only Asian-Americans are the bad guys.”

He was similarly unimpressed four years later when Universal’s then chairwoman Stacy Snider approached him about directing the third “Fast” movie, subtitled “Tokyo Drift.” At the time, Lin was still hot from his 2002 breakout Sundance hit “Better Luck Tomorrow” and had just wrapped his first studio movie, the Disney military drama “Annapolis.” Meanwhile, the “Fast” series seemed to be running on fumes. A 2003 sequel, “2 Fast 2 Furious,” had cost double the original film’s $38 million budget, but only slightly surpassed the former’s $207 million global gross. Star Vin Diesel and Cohen had both jumped ship after the first movie. And now Snider, producer Neal Moritz and screenwriter Chris Morgan were proposing a stand-alone installment minus the original characters, set in Tokyo and focused on the titular “drift” racing, in which competitors steer and brake their way around hairpin turns in an elegant gliding motion.

But the first script Lin read was “all cars drifting around Buddha statues and geisha girls,” so he passed. Which only made the studio want him more.

Finally, Lin took the assignment, but under the condition he be allowed to make certain changes. One involved wooing Diesel back for a film-ending cameo that would link “Tokyo Drift” back to the preceding films and open the door for more sequels. Lin recalls an eight-hour meeting with the actor, in which he used Diesel’s affection for the role-playing game “Dungeons & Dragons” to explain how he wanted to deepen the “Fast” series’ characters and make them more mythic, seeding some of the ideas that would come to fruition over the three subsequent movies.

There were other battles to be fought, such as Lin’s insistence that “Tokyo Drift” co-star Sonny Chiba, one of the legends of 1970s martial arts cinema, be allowed to deliver his lines in subtitled Japanese. Despite its lower budget, “Tokyo Drift” only grossed $158.5 million worldwide.

For 2009’s “Fast & Furious,” Lin had the full original cast back on board, plus a number of new additions (including Johnson, Korean-American Sung Kang and Israeli actress Gal Gadot) that have transformed the franchise into one that is easily Hollywood’s most racially and ethnically diverse. In turn, foreign box office has been soaring. “Fast & Furious” collected $363 million in global ticket sales and two years later, “Fast Five” sped its way to $626 million. Expectations for “Fast 6″ are even higher. And, Asians are no longer the bad guy.

Lin credits Universal for allowing him to take bigger and bolder risks with each successive film. “Usually when you’re successful, the tendency is to be very conservative and say, ‘Well, it worked here. Just do the same thing again.’ But this is a franchise where they’re like, ‘You want to do what? OK. Go.’” That made it hard to turn down the offer to direct the planned seventh “Fast” film. But Lin has arrived at a place in his career where he feels ready to begin a new chapter.

The “Fast” movies have paid off Lin’s mortgage for a while, and allowed him to give his parents — Taiwanese immigrants who spent 25 years running a mom-and-pop seafood joint in Anaheim — an early retirement. “So now I can make choices that I wouldn’t have been able to make in the last 10 years,” he says. He also oversees a small media empire: a culture blog (You Offend Me You Offend My Family); an original-content YouTube channel; and two production shingles — one (Barnstorm Pictures) a first-look deal with Universal, the other (Perfect Storm Entertainment) a joint venture with Chinese entrepreneur Bruno Wu’s Seven Stars Film Studios. Between the two production companies, Lin has an array of projects in various stages of development, ranging from a remake of the classic 1970s Samurai series “Lone Wolf and Cub” to more indie fare like a planned adaptation of David Henry Hwang’s Broadway play “Chinglish.”

Hwang says, “There’s a desire on the part of Hollywood—and all American industries really — to get a foothold in China and take advantage of this market, combined with an amazing degree of ignorance about what it actually would take to achieve that.” Hwang has also collaborated with Lin on a YouTube adaptation of his play Yellow Face, set to premiere this summer. He sees Lin as someone who may help to bridge the gap.

“I get that the Chinese market is growing, but I don’t think you can pander to that,” Lin says. “It’s like when people say “Fast and the Furious” is just fast cars and hot chicks—if it really was that easy, every studio would be doing it and making a lot of money.

Let me start with this: the Newport Beach Film Festival knows how to throw a party!

After watching the screening of Key of Life (Go HERE for my review of Key of Life), I made my way over to the posh Fashion Island to partake in the festivities of the Asian Showcase Gala. The Pacific Rim themed party took place around the famous Fashion Island koi pond, underneath a cool Orange County night sky.

Alcohol flowed freely courtesy of Absolut and Stella Artois while sushi, cream puffs and Asian tapas were served by local award-winning restaurants. Paper parasols and lanterns dotted the landscape, giving a nice pacific flavor to the environment as guests enjoyed live performances from local organizations. There were taiko drummers, a beat-boxing didgeridoo, martial artists and lion dancers who gave us a taste of Asian-Pacific culture to really top off the night.

If you weren’t able to make it out to this year’s Newport Beach Film Festival Asian Showcase Gala, you really missed out on a fantastic time. But don’t just take my word for it; check out the photos below for a glimpse of one of the best parties that I’ve been to this year!
