Karin has been so busy that it took her awhile to get to our questions, but busy is good and we still got an interview for you!
1. One of the great things about the theme of The People I’ve Slept With is that it calls out the sexual double standard between men and women regarding casual sex. What was your feeling about doing the role, more excitement or apprehension?
Karin: Excitement because she is someone who is free. Loving sex is viewed negagtively, but she is a good person who loves sex and that makes it a great role. What people choose to do doesn’t identify who they are so I think the character helps dispell stereotypes beyond just sexual stereotypes. It’s a character and in that sense it was fun and therapudic to play someone so free and I think the film also invokes healthy conversations about sex which needs to happen.
2. You had a role in Better Luck Tomorrow which is such a great film! In the 8 years since that film was released have you seen Hollywood film roles open up more for asian women in non-stereotypical roles?
Karin: Absolutely! Success gives more attention to asian actors. Slumdog Millionare is a great example. Ticket sales opens Hollywood’s eyes.
3. Besides acting, you are also an artist and musician. Can we expect to see an art exhibition and/or music from you?
Karin: I had car accident 2 months ago where the air bag went off. I realized I could have been seriously injured or even dead and it made me think about other things I wanted to do. My first thought was I have to do music because I haven’t done any singing in a long time, since the late 90’s. So I have been talking about a possible project with guitarist friend. I want to own my career and that means fulfilling other passions beyond acting.
4. What If People Died is now in post production. Can you give us a short synopsis about the film and your role in the project?
Karin: I can’t talk too much about it, but in general the film is about death as an epidemic. It was great fro me to get into the mindset of a supernatural character and the director, Dominic Mah, was very open to suggestions about my character development. I think the release is expected in early 2011.
5. What film projects can we expect from you in the coming year?
Karin: A couple of shorts and I really want to write and direct my own short film. I’m auditioning for roles and in between auditions I am painting a series about life through the symbolism of trees that was inspired by the loss of some friends and the death of my dog. In general I am evaluating what I wanna do and becoming comfortable changing focus when new things come along to inspire me.
