Today marks the beginning of a two weekend event sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, New Voices From Vietnam, showcasing the emerging Vietnamese film industry which continues to expand rapidly and has been producing some amazing films. The event is in association with the UCLA Film & Television Archive, the Freer & Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institution and the Vietnam Cinema Department, and UCLA’s Billy Wilder Theater will be the setting for the screenings. At only $5 for general admission and $3 for students, those close enough to get to UCLA over the next two weekends should plan to attend and be prepared to be amazed and what is coming out of Vietnam on film!

The event opens tonight at 7:30PM with Dang Di Phan’s Bi, Don’t Be Afraid which is his film debut and has already received much critical acclaim. The story centers around six-year-old Bi and his family’s  emotional disconnections. Bi’s alcoholic father conducts an affair, his neglected mother represses her sorrow and his aunt romantically pursues a teenage boy while his sick and long-absent grandfather moves in creating a new emotional center. The director will be in attendance at the screening and available for a Q&A which we hope to capture for those unable to make the screening.
