Comedy is the hardest genre to write because it’s easy to have a few great lines in a production, but to be able to sustain the humor and not start digging into cliches is the hard part. Standing ovation for Paul Kikuchi who has the gift to write comedy and knew not to drag it on for 2 hours and wear out his humor welcome.

Wrinkles starts with laughs and this play does not stop keeping you amused. The audience laughter seemed never ending and rightfully so…not just because of Paul’s work. In the hands of Director Jeff Liu the cast masterfully built on the script with the nuances of body language to bring everything to life. It is a rare case where you can say the entire cast performances all click perfectly, but this cast has wonderful chemistry and understands comedic timing.

Elizabeth Ho was able to walk that fine line of being a porn starlet without making the role dirty or campy, but humorous and loveable…not an easy task if your job is porn! Ki Hong Lee’s role as the teenage son could have pulled back ever so slightly, but for a relative newcomer he was able to hold his own with such veteran actors as Sab Shimono and Amy Hill. And of course these two owned the stage. Amy’s amazing performance has proven yet again that she understands comedy. Having her on stage created enough laughs to fill more than one barrel. Finally, porn grandpa Sab Shimono showed that he was a master conductor of this family and his perfectly reserved performance became the glue that pulled it all together to make this production, as Jeff Liu describes it, family friendly porn. And what does Trader Joe’s have to do with all this? I’m not tellin’…go see for yourself. For information visit the Wrinkles website here: Wrinkles.
